Muicle
Botanical: Justicia spicigera | Also called Mexican Honeysuckle, Firecracker Bush, Moyotli, Hierba de la Sangre
Vibrant orange flowers and green leaves from a Mexican shrub used for over 500 years in Aztec and Mayan medicine. Called “moyotli” by the Nahua people and “hierba de la sangre” — herb of the blood. Brews into stunning deep orange-red tea. Rich in anthocyanins, flavonoids, and plant-based iron. Naturally caffeine-free.
Herbal benefits
Muicle is Mexico’s #1 traditional blood-building and cleansing herb, prized for its mineral content and beautiful color:
Blood builder: #1 folk use. Rich in plant-based iron and used to support healthy red blood cell production. Traditional remedy for anemia, fatigue, pale complexion, and “weak blood”
Blood purifier: Known as “hierba de la sangre” for its use as a blood cleanser. Supports detoxification and elimination of toxins from the bloodstream
Respiratory support: Expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties help ease bronchitis, coughs, asthma, and chest congestion. Soothes irritated airways
Menstrual support: Emmenagogue properties help regulate cycle, ease cramping, and promote healthy flow. Used for scanty, delayed, or painful menses
Digestive aid: Carminative action relieves gas, bloating, and stomach cramps. Mild laxative effect supports regularity without harshness
Anti-inflammatory: Anthocyanins and flavonoids reduce inflammation in joints, respiratory tract, and tissues
Fever reducer: Diaphoretic tea used to break fevers and promote sweating. Traditional for dengue, malaria, and seasonal fevers
Kidney & urinary health: Diuretic properties support kidney function and help flush the urinary tract. Folk remedy for UTIs
Wound healing: Topical wash for cuts, bruises, and skin infections. Antimicrobial and astringent to stop bleeding
Nerve calm: Mild sedative used for anxiety, nervousness, and insomnia. Calms the nervous system without drowsiness
Taste & use
Mild, earthy, and slightly sweet with no bitterness. Pleasant and easy to drink daily. Brews bright orange-red — the color of blood.
How to use:
Tea: Steep 1-2 tsp dried leaf/flower in hot spring water 10-15 minutes, covered. Drink 1-3 cups daily. Water turns vibrant orange.
Topical wash: Brew strong tea and cool. Use as wash for wounds, skin issues, or hair rinse for scalp health.
Long-term tonic: Safe for daily use as gentle mineral-rich blood builder. Traditional postpartum and post-illness tea.
What makes it different
Muicle is famous for turning water bright orange-red — the same anthocyanins that color the tea are antioxidants that support blood and vascular health. Aztec midwives gave it to women after childbirth to rebuild blood and strength. Unlike iron supplements that cause constipation, muicle is gentle and actually promotes elimination. The plant was used to dye textiles deep orange before synthetic dyes existed. It’s one of the few herbs that builds blood while also cleansing it — a dual action rare in plant medicine. Grows in nearly every Mexican home garden as both medicine and ornamental. The name “moyotli” means mosquito because it was also used to repel insects.
